Introduction to Assignment

In modern times, we learn more by seeing/experiencing than by reading. Seeing different situations as lived by others or in the shape of our own experiences, lead to profound learning and knowledge-sharing. This is very useful in a background where students are exposed to diverse situations, each unveiling different concepts before them. In case of an academic audience, the usefulness of teaching through movies is a relatively newer trend to apply the thematic underpinning of the presentation in teaching about specific concepts. While students show greater interest to these ways of instruction, they are also exposed to an interesting manner in which they engage and explore new worlds. This assignment is based on an evaluation of the famous movie “Two for the Money”, in order to see how the contents of the movie imply in the marketing class. We would base our assignment into two parts, the first one defining specific characteristics of the movie and the second part illustrating how those characteristics and the movie, in general, could be applied for teaching purposes.

Foreword on the Movie

The movie “Two for money” was released in the year 2006, and was directed by D.J. Caruso. The movie revolves around gambling and shows how the abilities of one person were utilized in the business of another. The movie is based on two lead characters, Matthew McConaughey as Brandon Lang who is an ex-college football champion, skilled at predicting the correct outcomes of sports matches. His career was put into jeopardy when he suffered from an injury that put an end to his career. Another character of the film Walter Abrams (Al Pacino) is noteworthy, since he plays the owner of a huge gambling operations and a great business tycoon possessing immense intelligence and business sense.

Walter used Brandon's kills by bringing him to New York and engaging him in the gambling business along with a fascinating lifestyle full of glitz and glamour. Brandon soon found himself to be completely drenched in the new lifestyle which was materialistic and ostentatious. It so happened that Brandon's magic soon began to falter, making him less useful to Walter. Walter suddenly starts looking down upon him, making it an aggressive situation for Brandon. Soon the viewers found the two men in a struggle to outshine each other and emerge victorious. This battle leads to newer issues on their end, sacrificing their lives while Walter's wife (Rene Russo) was caught in the middle.
