Introduction

The U.S. industry retains global domination in the world of cinema, but the Hindi cinema, popularly known as Bollywood, has become a cultural phenomenon that transcends borders. The film industry in India raises passions. Nearly a thousand new films every year and fourteen million daily viewers make the Indian cinema huge, but nobody knows the secret of such success. The success behind the Indian film industry is the unique recipe, which consists of a mix of action, romance, glamour, excitement, tradition and national identity, all wrapped in a nice, happy ending story with heavy doses of music and dance. This is how a typical bollywood movie is all about. Films in India follow a more or less predetermined cliché, which pertains to a story of a boy falls in love with a girl, defeat the bad guys and ensure that social order is not altered (Joshi 2008, pp. 297-351). This comes along with a complex choreography, which mostly results in the success of Indian productions. Despite the issues of the Hindi cinema that faced challenges such as high costs of the big stars, which deplete the budget, creativity and quality, Bollywood continues to gain popularity and acceptance throughout the world for its development potential.

Watching a movie in India is a unique experience because the audience, mostly composed of young men, are eager for bold action scenes, participates regularly in cheering for the hero, booing evil villains and whistling for heroines. The success of the previous movies based on the same ingredients suggests that any film maker can be successful by incorporating the above characteristics. However, one of the significant aspects of Indian cinema is that viewers are not just heavy users of cinema, as nearly a thousand films a year, only a dozen get huge profits and public acclaim (Kabir 2001, pp. 213-230). Therefore, one needs to ask if the audiences have an interest in innovative concepts and story lines, which are different from a typical Bollywood movie. One of the significant examples is “Love, Sex, and Dhokha” directed by Dibakar Banerjee. The movie was appraised by the critics and some part of the audience for its bold, daring, and innovative concepts of film making. However, it is essential to analyze if the new genre of movies can be successful in the Indian cinema.

Cinema is the essence of life. It reflects elements of real life through frames of the camera and edition by the director.
