Population
The population of Istanbul was 1, 780,000 in 1945, which rapidly increased after 1950 and reached 1, 533,000 in 1955. With an increase of 40-50 thousand per year in the following years, the population reached 7, 309, 000 in 1990; 9,000,000 in 1997 and 199,000 in 2000. Today, Istanbul is a city having a population of over 10 million. The work system of population registration shown by the Institute of Statistics of Turkey depicts that migration in Istanbul has continued even today (Athanasopulos, p. 33-37).
This is what came out of the last survey of the Turkish Institute of Statistics published on the 31st of January. Moreover, the 12.7 million people of Istanbul represent 17.8% of the total Turkish population (71.5 million). The other most populous cities of Turkey are Ankara (6.4%), Izmir (5.3%), Bursa (3.5%) and Adana (2.8%). In total, the Turkish population grew by 1.38% in 2008. In the years 1950 to 2000, it had tripled thanks to the improvement of health and sanitary conditions (Athanasopulos, p. 33-37).
The population is urban and very young: the average age was 28.5 years (for the record, the average of France at 40 years). The labor force (i.e. age 15-65) is 66.9% of the total population. 0-14 years represent 26.3% of the population, while over 65 years represent only 6.8%. It is needless to say that the population of Istanbul is an asset for the economic development of this country (Athanasopulos, p. 33-37). This is what we call the demographic bonus. Finally, the density per square kilometer is 93 people, and the metropolis of Istanbul is with the highest density with 2,444 persons per km² (Athanasopulos, p. 33-37).
On the 31st of December 2010, the official inhabitants of the city Istanbul in Turkey, after updating the Statistical Institute of Turkey were 13255685. This number was made up by 64.66 percent (8,571,374) in the European part and 35.33 percent (4,684,311) ...
