CHAPTER 03: METHODOLOGY

Introduction

As individuals grow older they require some sort of assistance to maintain their optimum level of functioning. For some, this requires the skilled nursing intervention provided by nursing homes. According to the Colorado Nursing Home Census Bed Report for 2011, 16,067 people currently reside in nursing homes in the state of Colorado (Ashburn, 2008).

The increase in elderly population worldwide is attributed to the improvements in health services, educational status, and economic development (Bodenheimer & Berry-Millett, 2009). Demographic profiles across the world have changed radically (Gill, Allore, Holford & Guo, 2004). Between 1950 and 2010, life expectancy increased in all countries from 45 to 68 years old, and it is expected to increase to age 81 by the end of this 21, century (Gurwitz & Rochon, 2002).

Women tend to live longer than men, with an estimated 66 million women in the world (Huskamp, Stevenson, Chernew & Newhouse, 2010). For the first time in history the number of people aged 60 years and older exceeded the number of children in the world. In 2050, Asia is projected to have one of the largest elderly populations in the world (Hyndman, Ashburn & Stack, 2002).

Many of countries have selected a variety of methods in setting priorities and shed light on the options and the perceptions on the role the elderly play in the family and society (Judge, et.al., 2002). Some policies of the Saudi government are based on the principle of active aging and autonomy, facilitating the continuation of life, independence in the home, and the provision of health services for them, as well as other measures that stress the importance of family ties and support (Kaiser, Hogan & Craig, 2008).

World-wide, the family is the main source of care for the elderly. Health is also a major milestone in the business plans of many countries, including prevention and equality in access to health care, active participation with respect to the elderly, and the full functionality of environments that support and care for elderly people (Mcleod, 2003).

The governments of different countries aim to provide the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, as well as equality before the law, and a decent standard of living without discrimination for any reason for the elderly population (Meier & Beresford, 2009).

It may be the facts known to the elderly, and therefore, there is a need to focus on providing health care for the elderly is very essential, especially health services provided at home, which may have a positive impact on the application of future studies in the field of care for the elderly (Mitchell, et al., 2009).
