These days, unmarried black women have become the figure of fascination. Popular books by writers including T.D. Jakes and Steve Harvey, cable news specials, newspaper articles about single black women and the films of Tyler Perry are sending the American public into deep dismay. The justification provided for this phenomenon appears to be of two types: misrepresentations of perverse and hostile black women or indecent account of the irresponsibility exhibited by black male. For the popular media, it is uncommon to inculcate thorough historical or social analyses careful social or historical analyses.
