Abstract

Romani community is one of the most marginalized community in Europe both in the past and present time .The paper uses the examples of the suffering they faced through the hand of Europeans to show the level of discrimination they have faced .The paper also highlight their migration from India, to the suffering in Europe and other parts of the world. This report not only talks about the discrimination faced by them in the history but also the recent incidents which affected them. Analysis of the Similarities and differences of the Romani Society with American society is done. In this report the reason for their discrimination is also discussed which were caused due to certain reason like lack of tolerance to their culture practices .Thus this report is a good guide for understanding the Romani People through ages in the form of conflicts ,sufferings ,deportation and socio-economic condition .

Introduction

The Romani are traditionally nomadic people currently living worldwide. They are commonly known as gypsy. This term was derived from Egyptian background, thus it made non-gypsy to believe that they were from Egypt .In reality the ethnic gypsies were the descendent of a group belonging to northern India who migrated due to the danger posed by eastward movement of Islamic Forces. Over the period of many decades they moved westward into Europe and Africa .They were also able to enter United States, an estimate of their number in United States range between one hundred thousand to One million (Heimlich 2006).The majority of their population due to some historical reason settled in Balkan region going as far as all former socialist countries and many other part of the world. Following the patterns of the indigenous people they were expelled many times from Europe and America. They also had to face series of genocide throughout the history in different parts of the world. History is filled with the suffering of them through the hand of European, Asians and Americans. Romani people in most of the part of the world are considered to be temporary workers or guest for they don't belong to that country. This is the society which has rejected all invitations and efforts by others to assimilate them in their culture; have maintained their distinctive culture all over the world. In the political arena it is also not confirmed whether they would accept separate corporate political pluralism. So they are the minority which has suffered a lot in the history, for that reason now they are major focus of European policy makers. Special attention is given to them after the creation of European Union, when eight countries from Europe signed a declaration, in which it was decided that year 2005 to 2015 would be considered a decade of Roma inclusion ...
