There are two types of assessments which are prevailing in the world these days these are formal and informal methods of assessment. An informal method of assessment includes the process of measuring a person's performance through casual observation. This includes watching person from a distance in such a way that he does not know that he is being assessed. Since the person is not aware of the assessment this process becomes valid where there are no formal rules and regulations. In informal assessment the person who is being assessed does not follows standards of performance. While in formal assessment there are pre-define rules, regulations and standards. The individual who is being assessed follows a pattern of define structure and rules therefore this make it easy for the assessor to assess the performance without any informal observation. The person who is being assessed has to perform according to the rules and standard and then his performance is compared with the standards that are prescribed by the assessor or the organization (Whiston, 2009).
Both the methods of assessment has their own usage and importance and it cannot be said that one method of assessment is better than the other until and unless whole scenario is not given. It has been seen that in practical work informal assessment performs well while for assessing the vocabulary and structure knowledge of a language formal methods are proffered by the researchers and professors. So we have to initially conduct a thorough research regarding the topic and the individual which has to be assessed (Morris et al, 2013).
