Improving the Student's Attendance will Increase Student Learning

Chapter I: Introduction

Background

Discipline is a key requirement for achieving success in and field endeavored. For example within an academic institution students are shaped for becoming responsible citizens of the society, and becoming individuals who are capable of executing duties and tasks without considerable supervisory. The same students when at homes are trusted by their guardians and parents for helping themselves in seeking a bright future for themselves, but the type of surroundings that these adolescents are brought up often negatively impacts them, which tests their discipline and control. A significant element attracting these students within schools that shakes their cognitive and psychological equilibrium is absenteeism.

When the act of being absent in the academic institution is conducted by a student, particularly at college level, the student experiences a loss of instructional time and learning ending up in poor academic and social achievements, and if the student is enrolled in a private academic institution then another loss that is the financial loss is also observed though not by the students but by his / her parents or guardians. As the student repeatedly neglect the opportunities of learning in the academic institution, the student might sooner or later drop out of the institution, which moves him/ her to a life of unemployment, poverty, crime and delinquency. Therefore, the consequences of absenteeism are far-reaching.

Problem Statement

The performance of the students is directly related to their attendance, and improving the overall absenteeism rate will increase the rate of learning among students.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of absenteeism on learning of students. In a number of states, attendance to secondary and primary schools is mandatory; hence, learners who show patterns of persistent absences and occasionally attend their classes disobey that law of mandatory attendance. Only those absences, which are due to family crises and illness, are considered as excused absences. An unexplainable or unjustifiable nonattendance or absence from the academic institution with attempt by the enrolled individual to cover up the absenteeism is known as truancy. Studies conducted on school truancy/non-attendance/absenteeism at the secondary and primary levels advocates that it is a trend with no solitary cause-effect relationship (Cameron, 2004). Accepting the trend means taking into consideration the multidirectional and interrelated forces acting together among them, to be precise the community, the school, and the student.

Absenteeism from school is linked to a number of circumstances. For several students, the choice to be absent from school emerges from experiences of situations of disempowerment, which are articulated as sense of defenselessness in opposition to several problems in the safety, health and family that are quite practical. This research assists preceding researches concerning the dominance of absenteeism that is ignored by parents and the role of ...
