If one were to go around asking people the most important phases of their lives, he would never get the same answers from two people. This is because it all depends from person to person. According to the stages of development defined by Erik Erikson, there were countless chances for deficits as well as optimistic ego development in my character throughout my middle and late adulthood (Beckett & Taylor, 2010).

According to Erik Erikson, the 'middle adulthood' involves that period of a person's life that lies between the age of 35 and 65 years. I have been consciously aware of the fact that I developed a strong inclination towards creative arts and meaningful works during middle adulthood. As I crossed the threshold of 35 years, I realized how I slowly evolved into a more practical and reasonable man as I gained the capacity to confront various issues concerning my family which I had previously gone to great lengths to avoid. This meant that, during this stage, I realized that I was prepared to play the role of the leader of the family and resolve many outstanding family issues.

Apart from the care and empathy that I developed during the stage of middle adulthood, I also developed a strong likeness towards the creative arts and meaningful works. For instance, I had always been fascinated by writing and literature and it was only during this particular stage in my life that I realized my potential and talent in creative writing. Erik Erikson has identified this phase of human development as self-absorption and I knew why it was called so - I became increasingly aware of my hidden talents and abilities after I had reached 35 years of age (Sudbery, 2009).
