HRM of Easy Jet

HRM of Easy Jet

Introduction

EasyJet is a “point-to-point” flyer, with no network of routes and no alliances. It merely offers short-haul flights between select destinations in Europe. Bookings can only be done via the Internet or telephone. EasyJet is basically a virtual enterprise, outsourcing functions such as check-in and baggage handling. Its paperless office in Luton also serves as a call center, taking orders over the phone—although Internet bookings are offered extra discounts. Their fleet consists only of Boeing 737s, minimizing demands on maintenance and repair crews. EasyJet flies over five million passengers annually, has an 80 percent utilization factor, high in a very competitive industry, and makes roughly $2 profit on each passenger. Thriving on the expansion of the European Union, in 2008 it opened service to the island of Malta. It established easyGroup as a unit to stretch the brand into new business, and has opened an easyEverything Internet cafe—”world's largest”—in London. It has spawned imitators, British Airways with its “Go” subbrand and KLM with “Buzz.” The diversity policy of easy jet has helped esyJet to capture the success. (Jones, 45-50)

This paper critically analyses the diversity policy of easy jet and its impact upon the business of Easy Jet. It also analytically evaluates the recruitment, learning and development policies and strategies of easy jet and how they are interlinked.

Discussion

The diversity of UK society is already presented in the workplace. It stems not from a “movement” to be inclusive but from increasing demand for skilled labor that is accelerating recruitment from nontraditional and foreign labor markets. The kaleidoscope of issues that have become associated with workplace diversity reflects the many aspects of culture and social structure that are affected by demography. They cannot be eradicated - only unbundled and reinvented. This is the art and science of management. (Liff, 65-76)
