How Terrorism Recruitment can be suppressed by the US in Yemen?
Abstract
Yemen is fast emerging as a state where terrorist organizations, such as Al Qaeda and its affiliates are actively recruiting members, in addition to playing host to an unknown number of training camps which are breeding grounds for terrorists, whose ideology is solely based on hatred and murder. Their ultimate goal is to end the global domination of America, and they are intent on killing many people as they can, those who dare go against this ideology of murder and hatred. Although the Obama administration realizes the importance of preventing Yemen from becoming a terrorist safe haven, yet it will have to tackle this issue in a holistic and comprehensive manner. This paper will present useful recommendations, in order to come up with an appropriate reply to the question of how to suppress terrorism recruitment in Yemen?
How Terrorism Recruitment can be suppressed by the US in Yemen?
Introduction
Yemen, along with Pakistan and Somalia, is one of the countries which have gained significance over the years with Al Qaeda on the run in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is pertinent to say that the United States has done a remarkable job in containing terrorist attacks since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. However, even after the elimination of the world's most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, the terror network is trying to recuperate and emerge from the ashes. The death of a number of its leader, including bin Laden, has dealt a severe blow to Al Qaeda, but it does not mean that the network's ability to carry out attacks on America and its allies has evaporated (Pape, 2006).
Therefore, Al Qaeda is trying its best to regroup and reorganize in different parts of the world, and Yemen has emerged as a stronghold for the terror network to recruit members and to channel weapons and equipment. It is essential for the United States to be aware of the movements of this dangerous organization, and it is the responsibility of the Obama administration to prevent Yemen from becoming a country which is ruled by al Qaeda. Moreover, Yemen hosted the young Nigerian who tried to blow up the airliner on Christmas Day in 2009 in Detroit, Michigan. In addition, he also received training in one of the terror training camps in the country, and although he did not succeed in his evil and cowardly designs, he did send a shiver down the spine of the intelligence agencies and the security apparatus in the United States, which has led to an enhanced effort to combat terrorists based in Yemen. This resulted in an increase in drone attacks on targets in Yemen, which led to the killing of firebrand Yemeni-American cleric, Anwar al Awlaki.
Statement of Purpose
The reason I chose this particular topic is that it is one which has not been discussed as much as it should have been, and there is scarce literature which exists on the topic.
