Learning Styles: Honey and Mumford

Introduction

This assignment is about learning preferences proposed by Honey and Mumford; on the basis of whose questionnaire I have to evaluate my learning style and develop action plan considering the score I secure, so as to make my learning more effective. My learning mostly revolved around hands-on experience as I started to work at an early age of 17. After accumulating significant experience, I decided I can hone my skills further through gaining education and subsequently got myself enrolled for GCSE in 2010. Upon clearing GCSE, I subsequently passed Access Health course from Kirklees College and got selected in London Metropolitan University for Foundation Business Management Course.

Analysis

Peter Honey and Alan Mumford's theory identified Activist, Reflector, Theorist and Pragmatist as four basic learning preferences (LdPride). Briefly comparing them, Activists like to learn and try newer things without carefully considering the implications. They are less likely to learn using structured ways rather they best learn through unstructured techniques (archive.excellencegateway.org.uk). In contrast, Reflectors view situations from different perspectives and think carefully before arriving at conclusions. They are drawn towards structured learning and learn best through observing. As the term imply, Theorists integrate their observation into the mould of complex theories and learn through that, following step-by-step processes meanwhile (Grasha, 1996). Pragmatists are practical and learn through practical applications, rather than theoretical concepts and lengthy discussions, thus having disposition contrary to theorists (Hawk & Shah, 2007). (Refer to appendix ii).

As depicted by the score I gained in Honey and Mumford's Learning Preferences Questionnaire, I am an activist, Reflector and Pragmatist at the same time as I scored 9 across these three preferences. However, I am not really a Theorist and so scored 5 on this style (Honey & Mumford, 2006). The scores are aligned with the experiences I have accumulated over the period of my life. I discontinued education earlier because I found discussions and lectures monotonous which ensures against me as being Theorist. I am an Activist and Pragmatist which is backed by my risk-taking attitude. I entered into the corporate world at an immature age of 17, not actually taking into consideration how skipping an important phase of education would impact my life. I moved on, took the loan and started my professional life. I continued to buy and sell various such businesses regarding which I did not possess much technical knowledge. This involvement in disparate businesses not really relating to my field indicates how easily I get bored and further about my high risk appetite.

Conclusion

The analysis clearly shows that I am more of a practical person who gains learning and knowledge from hands-on experiences. This is also proved by my professional details of working from an early age and selling business profitably. This backs my aptitude for learning about concepts that can directly be applied at work. From the analysis, I have decided to observe successful individuals and how they run their businesses so as to ...
