GUAN YIN: The Bodhisattva that underwent a gender transformation in China

Guan Yin, in Chinese Daoist myth, was the fertility goddess who made rice edible by humans. Until she intervened, grains of rice were dry and empty, and she squeezed milk from her breasts to fill them - a miracle she repeats each year. In most cases the grains filled only with milk, but in a few plants Guan Yin squeezed so hard that drops of blood were added to the mixture, and 'red rice' was produced.
