A long line of patristic thought is epitomized in Augustine's (354-430) ideas of God's will, the 'natural light' in humankind, and the struggle against sinfulness. These ideas were to be of lasting importance to natural law theory. Once humans are seen as creatures, their being, including their moral life, must be understood in relation to their creator.
