Introduction

Modern Times is one of the greatest satirical comedies on cinema's screen. The central character of the film is played by Charlie himself as the 'Tramp'. The movie Modern Times (1936) is a silent story that has similar large boots, mustache, derby hat, baggy pants, cane and tight jacket, which makes the appearance of the fabulous Charlie Chaplin. The movie was directed by Chaplin himself. Modern Times was the first film of Chaplin after his accomplishment of City Light (1931) that released after nine years of 'Talkies'. The film portrays one of the principle themes; degrading people with respect to their best qualities.

Movie Review

The movie is about the social protest, which defines Charlie's final step against the harmonized sound film. Thus, this movie is also well known by his full length silent film. In the movie, we do not find any synchronized voice dialogue, but machines produce sounds and Charlie's actual voice that discovered while singing a nonsense imaginary song of claptrap. The original and special sound effects including several musical themes are improved by body movements and expressions of Charlie himself.

The film was set in the era of the enormous depression (1930s), as the film reflects the main concerns of poverty, unemployment and hunger of that time. Modern Times contains superbly memorable and inventive scenes that announce maddening struggle by blue-collar man against the dehumanizing effects of the industrial revolution era. The movie scenes of wandering find alternating between an assembly of a factory worker, a night watchman, a shipyard worker, an overstressed singing waiter and an occupant in jail.
