India, China and Brazil entered the post-Imperialist era sharing the world's greatest development problems and most of the world's poor people. For the first three postwar decades, both succeeded in raising substantially average output and incomes, while neither was close to the developing world's top performers. Both succeeded in mobilising fairly high savings for investment—rather more deliberately and effectively in China although China's central planning system squandered much of the value of its investment. Brazil grew faster on average than India, with massive swings in policy and performance with the vicissitudes of its centralised politics.
