Margret Antwood is a Canadian author who is famous for her works that depict the harsher and more vulgar aspect of the humankind. She had been involved with the feminist movements in her life, an important fact, which richly colors her writings. Most of her works are of female perspective unlike the common practice of being male oriented. This essay shall show how theocracy (the major God headed religions) has created a society of which the women is said to be an integral aspect, but the society is neither feminist nor even egalitarian. It shall in-corporate a few excerpts from her works, which shall high-light the failings of society in that regard.
Theocracy is any Government or society that is based on the idea that the leader is in direct commune with God and does His bidding on Earth. Such type of societies should favor the equality and relegate oppression as all the people and the world is His creation and He loves them all equally. Examples of such religions are Judism, Christianity, Islam, etc. It can be safe to say that almost all of the major religions of the world and Governments can be characterized under that category
Females because of male dominated societies have been seen to be under-privileged from the start of times. Feminist theories claim the fact that women are an integral part of the society and their importance is just as much as the men. They should be allotted complete and proper rights as men are and should not be treated like objects of esteem and power. The feminist motions and supporters make this demand that women should not be regarded as objects of sex and desire, but rather they also merit equal opportunities as men in all manners of life. In professions, the females should not be denied any opportunities because of their gender, whether its labor work or Presidential post.
Egalitarian Societies work on a similar principle, except the fact that instead of focusing on equalizing the rights of women, they demand or theorize the equality of rights of all people regardless of their race, culture, religion, gender and ethnicity. In such a society everyone is given equal opportunity and chance to excel and pursue whatever position or career they would like.
Thesis Statement
“Antwood's works serve to highlight the fact that theocracy has created a world which is neither feminist nor egalitarian.”
