Empire State Building Construction

Introduction

If we look at the background of the empire state building, we will come to know that for more than 40 years, after its construction, it was the world's tallest building. Later this status was taken away from the Empire State Building, after the construction of twin towers of World Trade Center, in 1972. It should be taken into considered the era in which the construction of the building started. In 1930, at the St. Patrick's Day, the foundation of the Empire State Building was laid. At that point of time, United States of America, was struggling with the great economic depression, and the construction of such monumental building in such economic conditions, is itself something unique about this building. If we analyze the overall factual dimensions of the building, then we will come to know that the Empire State building stands at 1472 feet, which is approximately 448 meters. The overall cost of construction for this enormous building was over 40 million US Dollars. The total cost was only associated with the construction of the building and its material. It is a fact that the design of the building was changed for a total of 16 times, during the planning phase of the construction. The engineers, after a long thought-out planning, came up with the final design of the Empire State Building.

The duration of its construction is also something very admirable. It took a total of 3000 workers to actually manage to complete the construction of the building in the record time of one year and forty five days. This total duration also includes all the public holidays and weekends.

If we look into the material, that was use in the construction of the Empire State building, we will come to know that it is made up of over 10 million bricks, 60,000 tons of steel, 750 tons of stainless steel and aluminum, and 200,000 cubic feet of limestone and granite. The reason for using such high amount of steel in the construction of this building is that when the construction was being planned, the architects of the Empire State Building were told that they have to come up with a design of a building which will be the tallest on the planet earth. The construction was part of intense competition in New York for the title of tallest building in the world. It was officially opened on May 1, 1931 in a special way: the president of the United States at the time (Herbert Hoover) became the Empire State Building lighting in a building at the touch of a button from Washington, DC. In order to do that, the designed the Empire State Building by using steel frame as the basic construction technique. The builders of the Empire State Building, ...
