Effective Police: Technological, Misconduct and Ethical

Introduction

There is an excessive use of force with police officers, police brutality, ill-treatment, and death on suspects while in custody was already taking place, but became a serious problem and out of control since 9/11. According to the Commissioner of the Virgin Islands Police Department, it is a Police Department policy, to place any or all officers charged with a criminal act on paid administrative leave. The number of officers placed on administrative leave with pay, pending a formal investigation is very high. Although the percentage rate for excessive use of force with police officers is high, the majority of these cases are never prosecuted.

To avoid these types of charges from occurring on officers, they should be required to undergo yearly drug testing, psychological evaluations, proper physical and academic trainings at least every six months. In order for these policies and requirements to be enforced, they should be a part of the police officers yearly evaluation. During the evaluation process, if an officer is missing one of the requirements at that time he/she should be given a time to have it completed. At that given time frame, they should be re-evaluated, and a decision should be made. This type of enforced policy will create positive and more productive work ethics for police officers at the police department they work.

Technology and Police

The major technological change in the communication system of the police prevents the talks as they tour the cities to be heard by others. Today anyone with a VHF radio can easily locate the police channel and listen to their dialogue, which is normally done in the media across the country for effective coverage of the police report. Thus, it seems to be something of great concern. Moreover, not only this there are others concerned also aligned with the advancements in the technology. Clearly, it will be easier to manipulate information in the same way that the statistics are changed to look like an improvement in safety, and believing that now will not have the pressure of an intrusive journalism showing everyday life from the place of the facts (Dahlbom, 1996).

On the other hand, technological change in the police will affect the coverage over the many obstacles that are usually faced by police men. New technologies have also allowed them to access certain information, something to which they are accustomed and that struggle every day. It's good that the technology give police security in their communications to the police but he errs when there will be celebrated radio silence, instead of focusing on what really matters: the criminals also hear those communications. Moreover, in recent time there is inclusion of surveillance cameras that help policemen with several points (Bloss, 2007).
