DOMESTIC TOURISM

Abstract

This research paper looks to investigate “What different attitudes exist between Scotland and Poland domestic tourists.” In 2010 Polish tourist arrivals were at 12.24 million, an increase of 4.9% over last year with 4.85 million tourists being British (www.intur.com.pl). Visiting tourists to Scotland by overseas visitors has increased by 10% in 2010 over 2009 and visitors from Europe have contributed to this because of favourable exchange rates. (Beaver, 1999, Pp.120-145)Few researches have been carried out for the reasons behind these figures.

The focus of research is “Domestic Tourism”, using a literature review and searching through on-line databases, statistics and tourism information websites using some of the follow keywords - “Domestic Tourism Figures” and “Poland” or “Scotland”. Although there are many sources of literature the main body for sourcing information in Scotland are the Visit Scotland website and the Institute of Tourism site for Poland.

In ascertaining the habits of domestic tourists a multiple research method was selected from which deductions were made at the beginning of the research. (Baum, 1998, Pp. 75-79)Primary and secondary researches will be made using data from accurate sources on line and a survey/questionnaire was selected as the research instrument. A number of one hundred of these were distributed equally among a sample of Scottish and Polish tourists. Other methods, such as mono and multi, were disregarded as the data collected directly from tourists was felt to be more accurate.

A probability sample will be used owing to the large availability of tourists and their willingness to participate which does not creates any ethical or indeed any bias issues because we had no constraints on the type of method selected.

Domestic tourism has a massive effect on the economy of a country and initial findings show that visitors travelling from Scotland to Poland, and vice versa, have increased over the past decade and this shows no signs of decline.

Introduction

The primary emphasis of this research proposal is to identify, analyze and evaluate different attitudes that exist among the domestic tourists of Scotland and Poland. In this research proposal I will carry out the primary research techniques by using questionnaire techniques and interviews with individuals.

Definition of tourism

There is no single definition for tourism and the tourist industry; It is normally taken to include a proportion of the employment/activity in hotels, retail, catering, and other different services. Therefore, the tourism industry does not come under a (SIC) single standard industrial classification category. (Ankomah, 2000, pp.19-24)The (STB) Scottish tourist Board has defined a tourist as someone who spends a night in Scotland, away from his home irrespective of the purpose of the trip. Subsequently the domestic tourists are defined in the same way. It also includes the tourists with day trips of the different part of the country as well. The research paper will critically compare and contrast different domestic tourism attitudes in Scottish and polish people.
