CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

The aim of my dissertation is to address the depiction of Unemployment, Urban crimes and poverty in British teen films and Television, particularly depiction of ethnic minorities'. These films have become ever more popular and they are growing in to a complete genre, perhaps it's the British industry responds to Hollywood's low budget films. Films such as; Anuvahood (Adam Deacon, Daniel Toland 2011), Bullet Boy (Saul Dibb 2005), or Television series such as Top Boy(2011) are commonly associated in the popular imagination as the site of major social problems (crime, poverty, antisocial behaviour), the inner cities has become the symbol of the uprising of contemporary urban teen films. It depicts and suggests we are living in a time of self-absorption in society where violence's are centred on small of inner city youth and gang culture. In fact one may argue that writers of these films are turning the social-realist tradition films in to a stereotype comedy perhaps to attract more audience. I am interested in analysing how the media controversy centred on the teens drug -taking, sex and violence but ignored the most radical aspect of these films which seems to have shaped British low Budget film industry. For example the sequel of kidult-hood, Adult-hood has found box office success over 3.2 million this figure is unlike to go unnoticed. I intend to talk about the change in British urban films after the Kidult hood era. My intention is to discuss and look in to the presentation of unemployment and crimes in enhancing the subjective representation in these urban British films and whether it's a true account of the urban ethnic minority's contemporary in the inner cities.
