ABSTRACT

This research study aims to examine the data governance for decision support systems focusing on a Telecommunications Company. The decision support system is regarded as a business intelligence tool which is used to analyze the organizational data. In principle, it may seem that data analysis is straightforward, and easy to get through a customized application or a sophisticated ERP. DSS has the key features of reports dynamic, flexible and interactive so the user does not have to stick to the pre-defined lists that were configured at the time of implantation, and not always respond to their real questions. For DSS no technical knowledge required. A non-technical user can create new charts and reports, and navigate between them, with drag & drop or drill through. Therefore, to examine the information available or create new metrics is essential to seek help in the department. For this particular research study the questionnaire survey research design was utilized. The questionnaire survey was conducted with the employees of telecom companies. A set of 50 survey questions containing between three and six questions (averaging around 5) for each of the Data Governance disciplines. Each question consists of 5 responses, each corresponding to a particular level within the Data Governance Maturity Model. A Level 1 response represents the lowest level of maturity while a Level 5 response indicates the highest level of maturity. This scale is not a placement along an industry average, but rather a measure of the representative Data Governance competencies within an organization. The questionnaire was sent to each Interviewee. The purpose of the questionnaire was not to determine a “right” answer. It should be noted that in some cases the respondents felt compelled to indicate that they did not have enough knowledge on the particular subject that would facilitate an educated answer. Other respondents provided a level one or least mature response to a question where they had little or no knowledge. The findings of this particular research study indicate that there is a significant impact of the data governance and data support system in the telecom company. The data support system is an effective tool which can easily be used by all the employees of Telecom Company. The findings of questionnaire survey indicate that the employees of Telecom Company are well aware of DSS system and the company policy. The survey findings highlight that the IT staff view DG as an application or some form of management of data. Entity may take data into account at a low level; however the entity might not be at a stage whereby categorizing and management of data across the organization is possible. The entity could actually manage data vertically and application data maybe a regular occurrence. All of this may be due to a lack of strength in the entities processes and politics.
