Cross-Cultural Adaptation

Abstract

The research paper shows the cross cultural adaptation as a process which views both the language (translation) and cultural adaptation problems in the process of preparation of a questionnaire for use in a different setting. Cross cultural use of assessments are acknowledged and used by multiple of international educators, researchers and clinicians, since the higher education has the extensive progress of psychometrically sound assessments instruments is advanced and developed countries, the focus of the international researchers has directed towards the translation of the psychometrical instruments in different languages, followed by the methodology adopted in the translation and adaptation process, followed by the Chinese Version of the FABQ and its importance and the importance of the evidence-based systematic review in the field of physical therapy education, research and practice.

Introduction

Cross cultural adaptation is a procedure which views both the translation of language and cultural adaptation problems in the process of preparation of a questionnaire for use in a different setting (Beaton, Guillemin, et.al, 2000). Cross cultural use of assessments are acknowledged and used by multiple of international educators, researchers and clinicians, since the higher education has the extensive progress of psychometrically sound assessments instruments is advanced, and developed countries, the focus of the international researchers has aimed at the translation of the psychometrical instruments in different languages (Geisinger, 1994). The major contributing factor to the shortage of the assessment is the dissemination assessments use the developed countries, this make certain that the developed countries are following the enhancement in the health care and provision of improved delivery of services. Due to this there has been the development of the number of assessment tools into a language and then translated and validated into many other languages (Gandek, & Ware, 1998). The cultural needs and contextual needs of a population that is being evaluated should be adhered in the process of translation and validation, which entails the fine grounding in cross cultural adaptation (Matias-Carrelo, Chavez, et.al, (n.d.)).

There is a need of the equivalency between the target versions and source with the foundation on four dimensions in cross cultural adaption of the questionnaire or outcome measure, which includes: (1) semantic equivalence; (2) conceptual equivalence; (3) experiential equivalence; and (4) idiomatic equivalence. The semantic equivalence identifies the similarity amongst the meanings of words of the source language and the target language. Idiomatic equivalence identifies the ways by which the idioms and colloquialisms of the source language can be translated on to the language that is targeted. Experiential equivalence determined the similarity between the daily activities of the source culture and the targeted culture. Conceptual equivalence determines the resemblance and identity between the concepts of the source and target cultures.
