Controlling Crime Rates in Our Communities

Introduction

Crime prevention refers to the reduction of a crime being committed. One way to achieve this is to imprison those who committed crimes. Efforts to prevent crime are a central part of a community's policies. In each historical period and in every society, there have been prevention efforts designed in a different way. The crime prevention is usually divided into two parts: social and situational crime prevention. The first is aimed at the long-term impact on the conditions that affect criminal propensity (Bonora & Burton, 2006). Modern crime prevention based on routine activity theory's three conditions for crime: A crime opportunity requires a motivated offender, a suitable target for the criminal act and a lack of deterrent factors that can prevent the crime is committed. In crime prevention includes minimizing damage offenses and reduces the fear of crime. With the stop means an intervention in any ongoing, but the importance of prevention as a job to prevent that occur, the police work is not - in the sense they claim - to work towards preventing crime. Police described the reaction to crime, which is fighting. As a preventive work is about to occur, this is done for example by efforts put in towards young people who have committed crimes or actions against presumptive criminals (Arvanites & De?na, 2006).

The importance of crime prevention may have a significant change to include the previously considered to react and to fight crime, which may explain the police description. Social crime prevention is the effort to reduce the number of offenders and the propensity to commit crime. The main target groups for social crime prevention are children and adolescents, but also adult criminals. These measures are based on crime, social causes and the politically motivated actions can be based on such theories of strain, stamping and control theories, such as social ties and self-control. Prevention method may involve combat unemployment and efforts in vulnerable neighborhoods to education and treatment of an individual, with the goal that it should function better in society (Feins, 2007).
