3.1 Introduction

This chapter of the dissertation incorporates the method of research that has been adopted in order to meet the purpose of the dissertation. For this research, mixed method approach has been selected. The reason for selecting the mixed method approach is to allow a parallel mixed investigation for this research. Nevertheless, differences in generation and its effects on the banking sector are qualitative variables whereas the amount of usage on line banking is a quantitative variable.

This chapter of the dissertation provides the research method, an overview of the qualitative and quantitative method of research, reliability and validity of the data, informed consent of the participants, and the analysis of the data that has been obtained from the participants of survey and the interviewees.

3.2 Research Method

This research study has adopted a mixed method of research and therefore, it carries out both the survey questionnaire and interviews. The questionnaire has been carried out in order to obtain the perceptions that consumers have regarding online banking. The interviews have been conducted with the managers of banks in Bangladesh in order to obtain complete information on consumer perceptions regarding online banking (Creswell & Creswell, 2009, p. 45).

3.3 Overview of Qualitative Research

The research based on qualitative paradigm is well suited for exploring new topics (exploratory) that have not been previously addressed in specific studies or where the existing theory does not apply to a specific topic under investigation. The investigation is subjective, value laden, inductive and adopts insider approach (Denzin & Lincoln, 2005, p. 21). Data is rich in pictures, words and images from a small group of organizations or people. However, data collection consumes a lot of time and resources. Interpretation of data and the findings of the research are created jointly by the participants of the sample size that has been chosen for the research and the researcher. The findings are usually context specific and based of the interpretation of the researcher (Creswell & Creswell, 2009, p. 45).

The disadvantage is that its findings are usually not generalisable for time and place. Hence the research purely based on qualitative approach is not credible. For the purpose of objectivity, this paradigm is dependent on a few perceptions that are used to capture a better picture of the basic phenomena (Denzin & Lincoln, 2005, p. 21).

3.4 Overview of Quantitative Research

The positivist or quantitative paradigms are characterised by usage of theoretical propositions that are to be tested empirically in order to determine, whether the propositions are actually true. It is interested in measuring the relationship between ...
