Christopher Marlowe: The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus

Faust is the greatest theologian of his city, is known throughout the world, dialectic is unsurpassed in the art. But this is not enough: always want more, want more and more, and as such enters into a pact with Mephistopheles. But eventually die in despair because of one thing does not have the power: to postpone the time of his death.

Dr. Faustus, respectable German scholar, believes he has completed his knowledge of philosophy, medicine and religion, and decided to leave all this and learn magic, he attracts the supernatural. The drama tells the story of Faustus, a scholar so eager for knowledge is not satisfied with the academic knowledge, medicine and theology, ventured in the field of black magic . Since the research on your own and free of truth (the philosophy or science ) had always been at odds with the theology dogmatic , after making an invocation in his study, it appears the devil Mephistopheles with a covenant which states: Faustus will knowledge and services of the servant of Lucifer for twenty-four, after which Lucifer will have his soul(The Norton Anthology of English Literature, pp. 1023-1028).

In one of the spells he appears Mephistopheles, a demon. He tells her that he and his master Lucifer are doomed to live in hell for daring to conspire against God. Despite the warnings of Mephistopheles, Faust orders him Lucifer communicate his intention to sell his soul in exchange for 24 years in that period of time allowed to enjoy all the pleasures with Mephistopheles at your service. Fausto intends to be very powerful so that all nations will revere. (Snydre, pp. 565-577)

At midnight, Mephistopheles returns with the news that Lucifer has accepted the offer and seal the pact with blood. The blood is frozen and Fausto thinks it may be a warning. Come into play the good angel, who tries to convince him to repent, and the bad angel, who tells him to continue. Fausto finally decide to go and no regrets.

Meanwhile, Wagner, Faustus's servant, also wants to start in magic and brings up to Robin to be his servant.

Faust asks Mephistopheles to who created the world but it does not tell and again the idea of ??repentance goes through your head. To avoid appearing Lucifer, Beelzebub and Mephistopheles, and show the 7 deadly sins personified. Fausto is impressed and forget the idea of ??repentance(Ruickbie,pp 42-44).

With his new powers and aided by Mephistopheles, Faust goes to Rome, becomes invisible and sneaks into a feast that is offering Pope. There food spoils with his antics. His fame is spreading.

His next visit is to Germany, specifically going to visit the Emperor Charles V, Pope's enemy. This Faust hopes to see Alexander, Fausto brings up and the emperor was impressed. Benvolio, a gentleman of the court is ridiculed by Fausto because they believed him, he vows revenge.
