The article, Back on Track, by Barbara Branson Gray talks about the designing, losing, redesigning and rebirth of the Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. These nurses performed an extensive three-day visit to the Magnet site in Cincinnati at The Christ Hospital. The staff was not able to undertake right reporting though practiced it well and also had not provided enculturation of the structure of shared governance. The funding for and taking up of gap analysis along with the proper filing and documentation and the assessment by the ANCC enabled the rebirth of the Magnet designation.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center performs a Magnet site visit at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati which was a three-day procedure. They had felt that the extensive work involving data collection, meetings, process development and education directed toward supervising the nursing excellence standards and raising them would be fruitful. However, the Magnet designation was denied because of the inadequate articulation of the model of care by nursing department. Afterwards, a task force comprising 24 staff nurses was created. It conducted polls from hospital staff nurses regarding their views on the model of professional practice and incorporated the ideas in the revision of the nursing care model by turning it into a visual presentation too. Thus, a second attempt was given to the Magnet designation.

The concept of Magnet designation provides recognition for the healthcare organizations for nursing excellence, quality patient care, and advances in the professional nursing practice. Some hospitals are denied the Magnet designation for reasons that are different for every facility and often the problems include wrong kind of reporting regarding the documentation and lack of illustrations in the fulfillment of requirements.
