ABSTRACT
The present study would examine the situation of diabetes among black immigrants in New York between the ages of 55 to 65. Diabetes is a severe chronic condition and is characterized by consistent fluctuations in the blood glucose level of a person. The disease affects over 20 million people in the United States and is now characterized as a leading health concern in the United States. A study on diabetes is important within this group because of the burden of the disease on the individuals, families and cost to the society. The importance of diabetes within this age group becomes even more important when one considers that there might be important phenomena practice by this group that may benefit or hinder care practices. The purpose of the study is to review and relate findings that may be beneficial to program planners as well as to individual diabetics. Theoretical foundation for the study is rooted in the social cognitive theory; and the behavioral theory. These theoretical frameworks together with the literature review set the stage for the research question; the overall questions are condensed to find out what meaning the target group give to diabetes and how they self-care. A qualitative approach based on a phenomenological concept is utilized. Sampling technique for the data collection strategies is purposeful. Data analysis is conducted using the Vivo software. Implication for social change includes finding unique characteristics among the target group that may advance or hinder diabetes treatment; unique findings among the group may be added to the body of literature to effect social change. Another positive change implication is program planning for the group may be advanced.
