After the Africans were apprehended, some entities were battling for the ownership of the human cargo: Queen Isabella II of Spain, the last two residual crew constituents of La Amistad, the crew constituents of the USS Washington, the south lawmakers for punishment for the killing of the crew of La Amistad, and the African's themselves in owning their flexibility to come back to Africa.
