Cloud computing is one of the major developments of ICT. The principle is simple: move the computer processing power and data from the workstation (fixed / mobile) to large data centres. Among the main drivers of this transformation include the ubiquity of broadband access, the falling price of storage, or Moore's Law in terms of computing power. The rise of Web 2.0, usability and ergonomics of its online applications, is one of the most striking expressions of this development. Attractive to both users and developers, cloud computing relies on the economic model of pay-as-you-go, that is to say pay according to its growth and its individual needs. This model is also the norm in most sectors of the economy (Yan 2010, pp. 87).
Cloud computing is another latest technological novelty that facilitates servers to store data on the Internet. It allows accessing and using the files and applications without the need of any specific software to both individual users and businesses. It allows people to actually access and work on their files and applications using any computer from anywhere in the world using the Internet. Common people may do not know the term cloud computing but every computer user in this world is doing cloud computing in one or another way, email service being one of them.
Small to large corporations can use cloud computing technology for disaster recovery backup to ensure that files, applications and data will be safe in the occurrence of any type of disaster. Besides this, cloud computing also allows business to maintain operations online through the Internet. When a business is running online there is less or no risk of business operation being halted even when disasters hit. Through this point of view, cloud computing used for recovery is far better than business insurance because it will make sure that the business continue its regular functions at least online, despite disasters. While on the other hand, the insurance only covers the expenses incurred while the business remains is non functioning due to the disaster. Insurance will not cover the business opportunity loss or the potential income during the time of disaster.
The "Cloud" of Amazon
A long time ago Amazon launched Amazon Simple Storage Service an online storage service where you pay cents per GB of transfer (in fact even used it to host LaNacion.com banner ads), then launched the Simple Queue Service which was a messaging system "applications. Similarly, the Amazon had now released Elastic Compute Cloud, a virtual environment like a farm of virtual servers where the user can use hours and pay per GB transferred at very low prices.
With this latest release Amazon puts its entire infrastructure for one to develop the web service that comes to mind, paying pennies and having one of the best farms of servers in the world (Rahman 2011, pp. 30).
