Abstract

This study focused on the “Abraham Maslow” personal and profesional life. His contribution and his substantial work to the psychology. Beside this, study also focus on the theories, principle and applictaion in the business world. Abraham Maslow diverse the focus of psychology and looked at the positive areas of mental health, when majority of the psychologists focal point was featuring the nature of humans.

Introduction

Abraham H. Maslow, a founder of humanistic movement in psychology in late 50's. Maslow has positioned fundamental significance on personal freedom creativity and individuality as the crucial element adding to general well being and psychological health. He established the Association of Humanistic Psychology along with his colleague Carl Rogers and Rollo May, where the dignity and worth appreciated by members.

In 1950s, the two trend dominant in psychology that were Freudian psychoanalysis and Skinnerian behaviorism which diverse from humanistic movement that termed as “third Wave” in terms of theoretical constructs. At present, sway of humanistic psychology enlarge extreme further from the psychology discipline and has informed numerous parts of mainstream culture and education, as well.

Early Life

Abraham Maslow originates and leads the humanistic psychology movement. He was an American psychologist born on 1st April, 1908 in New York, Brooklyn and a professor at different universities which includes; New School for Social Research, Columbia University, Brooklyn College and Brandeis University. They belong from the Jewish generation who emigrated from Russia, a family who do not intellectually oriented but esteemed education. Maslow has expresses his early days as miserable and his ancestors as unloving and unhappy.

According to him, to overcome the loneliness and poverty, education is the only way to remove these miseries from the life. He wanted to study “everything” from good schooling City College of New York (CCNY) to a PhD from highly reputable University of Wisconsin. He focused more on the importance on the affirmative qualities in human beings and resist of treating them as a bag of symptoms. He got married at the age of 20 to Bertha Goodman, this was the period when he experience a “sense of direction” and “feeling of belonging” (Maslow, 2000).

Professional Life

He started his career in 1937 by teaching psychology at Brooklyn College and sustained his work in 1951 as a faculty member of the school. At the time of his teaching, he came across and inspired by Ruth Benedict (anthropologist) and Max Wertheimer (psychologist). His thought for the outstanding people created on earth with exceptional mentality that he initiated to examine people and their behavior. This was the base which let him to developed theories and research on potential of the human (Prilleltensky, 1992).

Abraham Maslow diverse the focus of psychology and looked at the positive areas of mental health, when majority of the psychologists focal point used to features the nature of humans.
