Introduction

Even under the Umayyads, as the Islamization of the Muslim Arabs conquered peoples began to appear irreconcilable contradiction between the claims of the conquerors in the privileged position in the state and fundamental egalitarianism of Islam, as conceived by devout Muslim conservatives, traditionalists and the newly converted to Islam, the inhabitants of the conquered provinces. The gap between the utopian ideal and reality was bound to generate conflict, which ultimately doomed the Umayyad state in death.
