Abstract

In this study we try to explore the “A Farewell to Arms” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is story of love between the young and idealistic soldier named Frederick Henry's nurse Catherine Barkley in the Italy of the First World War. The novel is largely autobiographical. Ernest Hemingway was actually a volunteer ambulance driver in the Italian Army, was wounded in the legs and met a nurse living a similar story of love. This allowed him to use his memories to create a raw and realistic war story, with descriptions of places and events far superior to what the protagonist has to have problems away from guns.

Introduction

Many characters in A Farewell to Arms disillusion themselves into a false comfort to seek solace from the pain of their grief-stricken reality.

Hemingway wrote this book in the thirties, he must have just 20 years and was one of his very first novel. The writing is deliberately very simple. There's no great descriptions, just enough to frame the story, not large elk romantic, no big theatrics. Many dialogues rendered almost word for word, advance the action in the manner, at times, a record. It was probably write a very modern for its time and has made no fold. A Farewell to Arms is now considered a classic. He recounts an adventure full of love and war with accents of truth and sincerity that make greatness. It notifies a story of love between the juvenile and idealistic fighter entitled Frederick Henry's doctor Catherine Barkley in the Italy of the First World War. The innovative is mostly autobiographical.
